Scenario
A Chinese woman lives quietly for herself, celebrating the prosperous Belle Epoque with song and dance. A meditation on love and the passage of time; a woman searches for her lost love among the ruins of a dismantled city and her own shattered memory, the Three Gorges Dam swallows entire cities as time swallows people, women sing and dance in joy and sorrow, and dreams resurface and are submerged by the water . . Lives change and often we don’t even realize it. Using mostly secondary footage and details from previous films, Zhang-ke weaves a cerebral and imaginative story. While I wish the material were completely new and pieced together into a coherent story, I can’t deny that Zhang-ke has a magical and mesmerizing effect on everything she does, even during her wanderings. Screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
