Scenario
Jagna is a young woman determined to find her own way in a Polish village at the end of the 19th century – a hotbed of constant gossip and quarrels, held together by rich and poor adherence to colorful traditions and deep-rooted patriarchy. All scenes were shot on camera, and then painted by over 100 artists. The film consists of 40,000 images and they used 6 images per 1 second of footage. Sometimes you can appreciate the artistry involved in making a movie, but you can’t fully enjoy the experience of watching the movie itself.
Which prompted them to create a story based on Polish
That’s exactly how I feel after watching Poland’s official entry for ‘Best International Feature Film’. category of the 96th Academy Awards 2024 under the title: 'PEASANTS' ('Chlopi'). Summary: « Jagna is a young woman determined to make her own way in a Polish village at the end of the 19th century – a hotbed of constant gossip and strife, held together by the rich and the poor, clinging to colorful traditions and deeply rooted patriarchy. » ;In 2017, another Dutch-Polish production 'Loving Vincent' (the story of Vincent Van Gogh) was created, using a similar painting technique, by roughly the same Polish team. 'Loving Vincent' it received a huge number of good reviews and was appreciated for its art.
The beauty of psychedelic trips is that they are relatively short and intense
With this type of technique comes a huge amount of color, since every frame of film (in the 24 frames per second PAL system) had to be painted over the film. The reason why this technique worked in this Dutch production is because the subject of the film was about a famous, tragic painter, so stylistically and thematically there was an artistic coherence after watching 'THE PEASANT' I wondered if this painting technique was too much of a distraction, and I couldn’t help but wonder if this film wouldn’t have been better without it if it just had standard color correction. In order to fully immerse ourselves in the story and appreciate the real acting performances, we observe the micro-bodily expressions of the actors, judging the quality of their characterization according to how much the non-verbal cues mix with what they say, so that every micro-expression, especially on the face and eyes, speaks to us subconsciously which actor in the character of things In « PEASANTS » while the camera moves around the picture, the whole picture constantly vibrates, as happens during a psychedelic trip, the colors transform and. vibrate.
Constant movement in the frame can create a feeling of discomfort in the viewer
'PEASANTS' it seems like an almost 2 hour psychedelic trip that could make the audience nauseous. As much as I wanted to love this movie, in the end I was glad I stuck with it, because I had moments where I felt disconnected from the experience. fair enough, it has to be said that all the performances are very solid and again this film is full of masterwork, yet the technique used seems a bit gimmicky and to be honest in the age of phone apps that add cartoons or color correct footage, it’s not that unique anymore. Finally, 'PEASANTS' it’s really a potentially tragic and emotional story, which in my opinion, due to the painting technique, loses what makes this story interesting.
Emotionality is lost, which is a real shame
However, I applaud all the filmmakers for the amount of innovative work they’ve done, it’s just for my taste, and the Academy (unfortunately 'PEASANTS' wasn’t chosen to be nominated) seems to agree with that in my estimation. I still recommend it for its artistic value.
